Breaking the Ice: Justin Davis on Hockey’s Culture, Concussions and the Need for Change

Former professional hockey player and author Justin Davis joins The Heart of Sports to discuss his new book, Breaking the Ice, which tells the stories of seven people working to understand and improve the game of hockey.

Davis discusses the concussions and brain injury he experienced during his career, the pressure players face to compete through injuries and why young athletes need an independent adult willing to protect their long-term interests. He also examines hockey’s complicated relationship with fighting, the fear that keeps players and families from speaking out and how stronger reporting systems, investigative journalism and new perspectives can help make the sport safer without losing what makes it special.
